Get More Readable Excel Sheets

Understand how width choices affect your workbook.

For most workbooks, a maximum width of 40–50 keeps longer descriptions readable without making each sheet extremely wide. Browser measurements are estimates and may differ from the desktop Excel AutoFit algorithm.

If hidden columns make your workbook difficult to inspect, reveal them first with the Unhide Rows & Columns in Excel tool. If your cells contain unnecessary spaces, clean them with Remove Spaces in Excel before adjusting widths.

Columns with wrapped text, merged cells, specialized number formats or fonts may need a final adjustment in Excel. Long formula expressions are measured from their cached results when available.

AutoFit Excel FAQ

Answers about column width, privacy and format support.

Does this change the values or formulas?
No. Only the column width definitions are updated; cell values, formulas and workbook resources are left intact.
Is it exactly the same as Excel AutoFit?
Not always. Widths are estimated using browser font measurement. Excel may show slight differences for specialized fonts, number formats, merged cells, and formulas without cached values.
Will hidden columns stay hidden?
Yes. The default setting skips hidden columns and preserves their visibility.
Can I set a maximum width?
Yes. Pick a maximum in Excel character-width units so long text columns do not become excessively wide.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The spreadsheet is opened and processed locally in your web browser.
Can I also unhide columns?
That is a separate operation. Use the Unhide Rows & Columns tool before AutoFit if you want to reveal them.
