Why JSON Formatting and Validation Belong Together
A formatter can only safely re-indent data after the JSON syntax is valid. This tool parses the full document first, reports the first error with a line and column, and only then creates formatted or minified output. JSON strings require double quotes, object keys must be quoted, trailing commas are invalid, and comments are not part of standard JSON. The formatter does not silently “repair” invalid input, so you can see the exact problem rather than receive a changed document without review.

Is my JSON uploaded to a server?
No. Formatting, validation, minification, and Tree View all run locally in your browser tab.
Can this formatter handle very large numbers?
Yes. The formatter keeps JSON number tokens as text while parsing, so integers beyond JavaScript's safe integer range are not rounded during formatting.
Why is my JSON invalid?
Common causes include trailing commas, single quotes, unquoted property names, comments, or a missing bracket. The error message shows the first detected problem and its line and column.
Does it fix broken JSON automatically?
No. V1 deliberately validates strict JSON rather than silently changing invalid syntax. This makes the transformation predictable and reviewable.
Can I open and download JSON files?
Yes. Open a local .json or text file, process it, and download the resulting JSON. For spreadsheet files, use the Online Excel Editor instead.
