How Automatic Whitespace Detection Works
The tool treats the selected border color or transparency as empty space, then finds the smallest rectangle that still contains every pixel that falls outside that background rule. It changes the canvas bounds only; it does not resize, stretch, sharpen, or resample the retained pixels.
For clean transparent graphics, a 0% tolerance is usually the safest start. For JPEG product photos or scanned pages, small color variations can make a visually white border contain many slightly different pixel values, so increase tolerance gradually while watching the crop box.
Use low tolerance whenthe image has pale shadows, anti-aliased edges, light artwork, or transparency you want to preserve.
Use Safe Margin whenyou want a consistent breathing space after trimming instead of leaving an unpredictable amount of the original border.
Disable a side whena scanner shadow, caption, watermark, or intentional frame touches only one edge and should remain in the result.

How do I remove white space around an image?
Upload the image and leave the background on Auto detect. If the border is clean white, the suggested crop should update immediately. For JPEG compression or scan noise, raise the tolerance a few points until the crop box reaches the real content.
Can this trim transparent pixels from a PNG?
Yes. Auto detect recognizes mostly transparent corners, or you can choose Transparent manually. A 0% tolerance removes fully transparent padding while preserving partially transparent edge pixels.
Why does a white JPEG border sometimes need tolerance?
JPEG compression changes flat white pixels into a small range of near-white values. Tolerance lets those small differences still count as border. Increase it gradually because a high setting can also treat pale image content as background.
Does trimming reduce image quality or resolution?
The crop does not resize the retained pixels. Width and height change because outer rows and columns are removed. PNG output stays lossless, while JPG and WebP sources are re-encoded at high quality when downloaded.
Can I keep a little space around the image after trimming?
Yes. Use Safe Margin to keep up to 100 pixels of the original border around the detected content. The margin never extends beyond the source image.
Can I trim only one, two, or three sides?
Yes. Turn off any Top, Right, Bottom, or Left switch to preserve that edge while trimming the other enabled sides.
What happens if the entire image matches the selected background?
The tool reports that no visible content was found and disables the download action instead of producing a confusing 1 × 1 result. Lower the tolerance or select a different background mode.
