How to Split First and Last Name in Excel

If first and last names are combined in one Excel column, you can quickly separate them into two columns without writing formulas.

Step 1: Open the Split First and Last Name tool

Step 2: Copy the names from Excel

Select the cells containing the full names in Excel and copy them.

Paste the names into the tool, with one name on each line.

For example:

  • John Smith
  • Emma Johnson
  • Michael Brown

Step 3: Split the names

Click the split button.

The tool will separate the names into First Name and Last Name columns.

Step 4: Check the results

Review the split names to make sure they are correct.

Names with middle names or multi-part surnames may need a quick check.

Step 5: Download the results

Click Download CSV to save the separated names.

Open the CSV in Excel or copy the results back into your spreadsheet.
